The teacher retention issue has been on the cover of education for years. Unfortunately, it is growing to be more than just the cover. Teacher retention is the issue of teachers leaving the profession, and the struggle of hiring new teachers to make up for those that the schools lost. This issue is a compelling issue because it is an issue that will take years to make better. In the article, Teacher Retention: A Simple Fix , discusses the challenges and possible solutions to teacher retention. One challenge that the article discussed is the fact that teachers are like a revolving door.
The educators are constantly coming into the teaching career, and then leaving after two years. This creates a difficult achievement journey for the students. The students may be in classrooms that overflow with their peers. This could create a challenge in focusing during their lessons. Another challenge is the fact that the students will not have a familiar face to look forward to. The students feel more comfortable when the are in a classroom with a teacher that they recognize. If they are constantly in a classroom with a new teacher in each class, they could never feel comfortable in the environment. If the students do not feel comfortable in their learning environment, they will not be able to retain new knowledge.
A possible solution that was explained in various articles is the suggestion of providing teachers an allowance. In the article, Teacher Retention, it is suggested that those who are experienced teachers will be given an allowance. It would be different from a stipend. The article also suggests better preparation tactics for new teachers. I would highly agree with this suggestion. As a first year teacher, the stress is packed on from the beginning. There needs to be a way to aid the new teachers to become comfortable in their new position. Why stay if they feel like they are not ready for it? Isn’t it better to leave? To a new teacher it is, because the stress is more than the consequences it will lead to.
